Your Quality Score

Many Adwords advertisers are not really that aware that they have a Quality Score (well, several actually).

quality_score21But you do and it is determined by the relevance of your keywords, ads and landing pages to the specific client’s specific request (keyword search). (It also factors in historic CTR data, but we will save that for another time ;) .

The Quality Score is calculated every time a search is made. Remember, Adwords marketing is an AUCTION based system — you are COMPETING for both position and the price you will pay for a click every time a search is made.

What happens is that your Quality Score for that ad/keyword set (as well as other factors) is multiplied by your bid. The same is done for your competitors. It is the result of those equations — NOT JUST YOUR BID — that determines where you wind up in the rankings and how much you pay for a click.

Split Testing Your Way to SuperCharged Profits
There are various testing options, but Split Testing is where all Adwords – PPC advertisers should start.

Imagine a horse race. Two horses stand at the starting gate and then BANG, they’re off. One horse wins, the other loses.

Now we know which horse is better than the other, right?

No, we don’t. We only know which one won the race this time and that could have been simply a matter of chance.

Now if we put those two poor horses back at the gate and have them run the race over and over again (OK, lets make this cars, I don’t want any charges of animal cruelty!) pretty soon one will win more often than the other for us to say with a statistical certainty that one is better than the other.

That, in a nutshell, is Split Testing.

Remember all those tiny keyword ad groups we created from your now greatly enhanced list of keywords? Well each ad group gets two horses (ads) in the competition. Those ads are shown (rotated) on an equal basis. A race is won each time one of the ads is clicked. And so pretty soon (after enough races) we have statistically valid results that show which is the better of the two ads.

What do we do then? We throw out the losing ad and try to write one that is even better than the winner. Then we start racing all over again.

Imagine all of your ads being run in Split Testing mode all day long every day. And imagine every day our in-house team reviewing the results and creating new ads for the winners. Split Testing Can't Really Be All That Important...Can It?

Think not? Let me give you one small example. Here are two competing ads:

Which ad do you think will perform better? Well here are the results:

Ad #1 on the left, our “proven” control ad, gives us a respectable 2.4% CTR.

But Ad #2, our test ad, came across the finish line with a whopping 3.63% CTR.

That’s a full 50% improvement! That’s three visitors to your website for every two that ad #1 provides.

Or think of it this way: By the time ad #1 brings you 100 visitors to your site, ad #2 will get you 150 visitors!

Now let’s play with those numbers for just a second.

  • Let’s say that your conversion rate for this ad is 5% and the net value of a sale for this product is $10.
  • If your traffic is 100 per week Ad #1 will result in 5 sales netting you $50. Ad #2 with 7.5 sales nets you $75.

Traditional AB split testing is great, it is essential….and it is fundamentally flawed in two important ways when used without modification for pay per click campaigns. I have not found any other PPC management company either understands this or will acknowledge it.testing2

Using traditional split testing you are often running a proven ad against a test ad on an equal basis. That means that if your proven ad is producing a three percent click through rate you are reducing its effectiveness by 50%. If the test ad achieves only a 1.5% click through rate during the testing period you have lost 25% of the click-throughs that you would have had by only running the proven ad. You lost one in four visitors you would have had. That’s lost money.
